A good early season on-trail hike to a continental divide summit with lots of wildflower possibilities and nice views.  The trail approaches near to the summit of Lewis and Clark Pass – a traditional crossing point for western tribes to reach the plains, and the spot where Captain Meriwether Lewis crossed the divide on his return trip.  Be sure to look for Father Point’s Cross – a low stone cross reputedly constructed by Father Nicholas Point in 1842.  The area burned during the 2017 Alice Creek fire after we visited, but much of the hike is in meadows and should still be quite nice.  Trailhead access is suitable for nearly all vehicles.

Directions (From Lincoln – North of Helena):

·         Drive east 10.2 miles on Hwy 200

·         Turn left (north) on the Alice Creek Road

·         Drive 8.6 miles up the Alice Creek Road to the end – where there is plenty of trailhead parking.

·         Hike east up the old 2-track and follow it to the upper meadow.  Watch for a somewhat faint footpath that heads south from the 2-track as the 2-track makes a final left turn towards the nearby summit of Lewis and Clark Pass.

       ·         Follow the foot path to the summit of Green Mountain.
