The turnoff is a “Y” 6.5 miles north on Hwy-93 from the west end of the bridge that cross the Flathead River immediately west of Polson. The road is a well-maintained dirt road that is suitable for most vehicles. The summit had an L-4 type lookout on a 50-foot tower that was constructed in 1935 but is reported to have been gone by 1969. The summit now has many antennas. The summit is on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai reservation and a tribal recreation permit is required. The permits are available at most sporting goods stores in the Missoula-Polson-Kalispell area. They cost $23 in 2021. We got ours at Allard’s Stage Stop gas station in St. Ignatius.
