On a recent trip to Idaho, I had the opportunity to activate Bernard Peak which is a drive up 45min or so from Coeur d'Alene.
The drive up was uneventful, though some sections of the road have quite a few potholes and washboards. I managed it in my wife's Toyota Highlander.
Starting on I95 and going east on Bunco Rd, it eventually turns into Pend Oreille Divide Rd 332 and turning left onto FS-2707 and another left onto FS-2708 and continuing on to the top. There is a turn around at the top and ample parking. The summit is a few hundred feet south of that by the remnants of a Fire Lookout, the foundation stones being all that remains.
I quickly raised my EFHW on fiberglass mast and worked 18 QSOs. There were no takers on 2m that evening. Even my wife down in Coeur d'Alene could hear nothing so propagation was not good that day.
Afterwards, I packed up and drove on back to town.
