On August 29, 2012, Guy, N7UN, Jeremy, NH6Z and Phil, NS7P, activated Eagles Rest in the Willamette Valley foothills of Lane Co, OR. This small summit sits at 3024' ASL (1725' above the trailhead). It is exposed rock surrounded by forest.
To get to the trailhead, take Hwy 58 east from I-5 to the Goodman Creek Rd across from Lookout Point Lake. Turn right onto Goodman Ck Rd and follow this decent gravel road to the reasonably well marked trailhead. Park and start hiking uphill on the trail. The trail is through a lovely forest that is old growth or close to it. The trail to the summit is about 2.5 miles long. On the way up, you pass the Ash Swale Shelter and cross a paved road that could have offered a shorter hike to the top.
Follow the well traveled trail out onto the outcrop. The rocky summit is small and was very tight for us as we erected three independent KX3 stations/antennas. In fact, It was too small to allow our antennas and 10W KX3s to operate simultaneously without fundamental overload. So, we took turns operating. Jeremy on 20m SSB, Guy on 20m CW and Phil on 20 and 40m CW. Each of us qualified our activation points.
The summit offers nice viewws of part of Eugene and the valley as well as across to Mt June and other summits. A well enjoyed summit activation that was capped by beers at a microbrewery in Eugene.
