With the reopening of FR 45 in the Mt. Hood National Forest Clackamas Ranger District in Oregon, a set of previously closed peaks are available to activators again just in time for the summer SOTA season! I chose to activate Wanderers Peak, along with South Fork Mountain (W7O/WV-030), in a single day double. The area was previously closed due to wildfire damage from the 2020 fires.
easy hike
Big Creek Baldy Mountain, Montana | August 29, 2021
This is an easy summit to activate. It's just very remote. A large fire lookout is on top of the peak but was not manned the day I was there.
Driving directions: From Yaak, Montana drive 17.5 miles south on 58. Take a left turn onto FS Road 309 and drive 5.27 easy miles to the trailhead. Here there is a winter ski/snowmobile hut with toilets and a large fire pit. Apparently this is a popular winter headquarters for cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The summit is an easy but steep 0.75 miles past the gate on the Forest Service road.
Magnetic Hill near Bellingham WA
This is an easy hike half on a good road and half by trail. The area is also used by mountain bikes. There is limited parking at the gate at location 48.688594 N, 122.403296 W, although few use this trail system. Follow the well maintained road .6 miles until the place on the right side of the road where the trail begins. See Picture.:
